new year 2013
i’m not much for making new years resolutions. mostly because i know about one week in (if that) i will have forgotten all about them or become too lazy to care. so this morning, first morning of 2013, camden and i sat down for a little unhealthy meal consisting of yesterdays movie theater kettle popcorn, a left over snack plate that included: pepperoni, cheese, and crackers, and of course a chocolate orange from a christmas stocking. hello 2013 and goodbye 2012!

i have to say 2012 was pretty good to us. camden and i celebrated our third anniversary, kramer had his third doggy birthday, this blog turned a whole year old, we moved for our fourth, yes fourth, time in four years, and of course took a trip to my very favorite city, new york.

while i was thinking about this blog post, i realized we did have a few goals i think we could work on this up coming year. staying put for more than one year to start. i’m just saying it would be nice to celebrate christmas more than once in the same home. saving more and spending less, though this may be a life goal if i’m honest. making our lives more simple and concentrating on the important things in life. taking more family walks, which we have already started getting better at. and eating more home cooked meals at the dinner table and less meals out at the restaurant table.

i do have a few goals for this blog as well, although they seem harder to put down on paper (or computer screen) than the others. however, i do want to thank all of you for helping make our 2012 so awesome. i’m so thankful for all you readers who come back everyday and share your sweet comments and help brighten my day. you have made this blog worth it and i thank you.

so here is to you 2012, may 2013 be just as great. happy new year!!

i’m really excited to be partnering up with tukula. have you heard of them? tukula is a cause-driven business invested in giving local ugandan artisans an opportunity to grow above poverty. each artisan is given above average wages for their quality handmade products plus medical care, access to saving programs, and pride themselves on providing an encouraging work environment. this gives these ugandan artisans the ability to provide for themselves and their families with homes, food, and education. each item you purchase from this lovely handmade store comes with a small card letting you know exactly who made your item. my bag (seen above) was made by a stunning lady named sally and let me just tell you this bag is flawless. they have an assortment of handmade bags, clutches, accessories and even have a small children’s line. you can see some of my favorites here, here and here.

– p.s. happy happy new year!! i’m so grateful for you all! xoxo – sara

i may have shared this brownie recipe last year but the holiday season just wouldn’t be complete without them (which is probably about what i said last year as well). it’s originally a william sonoma dessert recipe but i like to add a bit of peppermint to the mixture as well as some homemade peppermint frosting to go a-top because well yes, i am that kind of girl. camden just got home with warm cinnamon bagels oozing with hot butter and ice cold chai tea for breakfast so you will forgive me if this post is a bit on the short side (and, may i add, the ramble-y side?). the recipe is below so go on and make them already. your tastebuds and i thank you!

*on a side note: i usually double the recipe to make twice as many brownies.

ingredients:
8 tbs. of  unsalted butter cut into 4 pieces
3 oz. of unsweetened chocolate
1 cup of sugar
a pinch of salt
2 large eggs, at room temp.
1 tsp. of vanilla
1 tsp. of peppermint extract (optional)
3/4 cup of cake flour, sifted
3/4 cup of bittersweet chocolate chips or semisweet chocolate chips

preheat your oven to 350 degrees. lightly grease an 8 inch square baking dish (i usually use a glass one) or a 9×13 inch baking dish if doubling the recipe.

in a saucepan over low heat, combine the butter and the unsweetened chocolate (finely chopped). remove from the heat and slowly stir in the sugar and salt. add the vanilla and eggs and stir until well blended. sprinkle in the sifted flour over the mixture and stir until just blended. stir in the chips.

pour the batter into the prepared dish and spread evenly. bake until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the brownies comes out almost completely clean, about 30 minutes. do not over-bake. transfer pan to a metal rack and let cool completely.

ingredients – for the frosting (optional):
1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar
3/4 tbs spoons of chocolate powder, unsweetened
2-3 tbs of milk
3 tbs of unsalted butter, room temperature
large pinch of salt
tsp. of peppermint extract (optional)
tsp. of vanilla extract

in a large mixing bowl combine the powdered sugar, chocolate powered, milk, and butter. stir until well combined. add the salt, vanilla and peppermint extract until well combined. test for taste, frost when brownies are completely cool.

enjoy!

camden had his first official sunday off and we of course celebrated. can i just tell you how happy i am that camden gets a weekend day off? i was getting really fed up only seeing the guy after dark. and what better way to commemorate his first official no-work-sunday-day with the most perfect of sunday activities, brunch.

on a side note, i got restless with growing out these bangs of mine (surprise, surprise) and chopped them right off. i can never let them get passed my chin before i can no longer stand them and whack them back up to my eyes. camden likes me better this way anyhow, with bangs i mean, which, by the way, makes it that much harder to hold out and finish letting them grow.

and on my last and final tangent, can you hardly believe tomorrow is christmas eve? i for one can’t. i find myself asking this question much to often, but where has the time gone?
