camden and i have been working pretty hard to get things a bit more ready for upcoming baby. we’ve gotten the baby room cleared out and cleaned and we just set up the crib last night … and by we i mean i separated the screws and bolts and read the instruction while camden did everything else. things are far from complete but at least are a lot closer than they were before. here is just a little of what we’ve gotten done so far. i even got the few outfits we do have folded and organized in a drawer. more soon:)

who am i kidding … i say fabulous all the time, however, camden on the other hand rarely does. yet this is what he said when he saw this chair … “wow, that chair is fabulous”. i already agreed. we found it at my new favorite vintage store, mod a-go-go. this place is packed full of beautiful, secondhand, mid-century modern furniture, priced low, and everything is fabulous. it is one of those places that could get to be a real problem for me … but a good kind of problem if you catch my drift …  p.s. thank you to bleubird vintage for giving me this idea for where to place my plant and birds!

& when you run out of drawers in the kitchen …

one of the many things that inspired me while in england was how a lot of the old houses and castles displayed and stored their cooking/baking tools and utensils. walls and walls of old fashioned rolling pins, beaters, measuring spoons … etc. scattered beautifully onto crisp white walls … it pictured perfectly the rusticity, beauty, and use of each tool while being displayed in a modern and simple way that gave the room such and elegant yet balanced feel.

as our kitchen drawers have started to become more and more full, i’ve remembered back to those rooms in england, deciding to interpret my own wall of baking gadgets and supplies. each one is held up only by one or two nails … it was so simple to install and gives our kitchen its own unique look. i’m absolutely smitten by it.

dwelling small in the summer

summer is hot enough when you have an air-conditioned home to keep you cool from the blistering heat that awaits outside, but living in a small apartment with no a.c. has at times, for us at least, seemed unbearable. i, for one, can stand the cold mostly because there are always so many things you can easily do to get warm … for example: layering on more clothing, putting a heavier blanket on the bed, drinking a cup of hot cocoa … but when it comes to cooling down, it seems the options are far more limited especially when turning down the thermostat isn’t exactly an option. living through our first hot season with no more than a dinky removable air-conditioning unit to keep cool has been interesting to say the least, but as the heat of the summer has ruthlessly progressed, i’ve picked up tidbits of cooling tricks/ideas along the way that have really worked for us thus far.

DSC_0096
– keep a glass of ice cold water or a bowl of ice chips by the bed at night. it’s a great trick when we need something quick to cool down.
– invest in thick curtains or double-up your current ones in rooms that have windows getting direct sunlight during the day. this has helped keep our home (on average) four degrees cooler during the day. it doesn’t sound like much but sometimes four degrees can feel like ten.

DSC_0113-2
– find a decent/quiet fan that can blow air throughout the bedroom during the night. for us (me especially) sleeping has been the hardest part of this hot summer so having a fan that can constantly blow air on us/within our bedroom has made the biggest difference i can’t even tell you. i found this one at target. i really like it because it looks nice, works really well, and as far as fans go is decently quiet.
– stock up on popsicles and watermelon because nothing sounds better during the hottest part of the day than some cold, freshly sliced watermelon or a frozen popsicle.

DSC_0152
– request your window unit be placed in the room that will be used most even if your landlord wants to put it elsewhere. our landlord previously had our window unit in our dinning room which is not used nearly as much as our family room. having it moved there helps keep the rooms we do use most (the family room, kitchen, and bedroom) cooler than the ones that don’t get used as often (the dining room and office).
– take a cold shower before bed. camden especially likes to do this. it’s brutal for a few minutes while you cool down but if you can handle it, it helps a ton while trying to go to sleep.

DSC_0194
– freeze grapes for snacking … mostly because frozen grapes are delicious!
– keep lights/television off as much as possible during the day to help keep things cooler. for us, doing this during the bulk of the day has helped keep our place a few degrees cooler and hey … every degree counts!

– make your favorite drink into ice cubes. i have done this with chai tea a few times this summer and i absolutely love it.
– when all else fails grab an ice pack from the freezer and lay on it. works every time …

i would love to hear your tips for keeping cool if you have any good ones!

this is the first year and summer for the both of us that we have had to live without air-conditioning. our bedding situation was driving camden crazy. sleeping in an eighty degree house with a sheet, blanket, and comforter is a bit overwhelming. even though i love sleeping with the heavy weight of the cozy covers on top of me, i knew it was time to change it up. i switched out our darker patterned sheets for cool, white, crisp ones and threw our comforter into storage until next winter. keeping our covers in a neutral, lighter color gives the room a sense that it’s cooler than it really is. i got that brown and cream blanket with the intention of having it cover the entire bed, then layering the cream blanket over top for just a pop of pattern but realized shortly after purchasing it that it was going to be too small so it sadly just barely covers our feet. however, i like that it adds a bit of visual interest to the room, plus kramer has obviously taken a liking to it. i also brought in some paper flowers for our nightstand and finally got around to making ourselves one of my lights. with lighter weight covers mixed with a fan that blows throughout the night, hopefully we can get (and sleep) through this summer alive.

also, i just had to take a few a lot of pictures of the krames since we are leaving him for a few weeks and will miss him to death.

p.s. thank you all for your brilliant ideas and comments on the england post the other day. we are both so thankful and excited to check out some of the things suggested! xoxo
